CARE InternationalField Officer
Jan. 2007 - Jul. 2008After serving in positions such as Program Intern for World Agroforestry Centre, Research Assistant for the Western Kenya Health and Development Research Project, and as a Project Intern for USAID’s WASEH project in Nyanza, I had the great privilege of gaining entry into this field as a Field Officer on this project funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates’s School Water, Sanitation and Hygiene plus Community Impact Program. I was trusted to manage and direct program interventions and to liaise among district, regional, and national level partners, government officials, and key stakeholders to ensure successful implementation of various development initiatives within 59 schools and communities. I oversaw the Baseline Survey and Mid-Term Evaluation, served as technical advisor for safe water, sanitation, and hygiene, authored/submitted narrative and financial reports, and conducted progress review meetings. I further gained experience in project managing initiatives, from designing work plans, to monitoring milestones, and minimizing risk. I also developed and administered field budgets. I was proud of making a difference by: ✯ Effectively managing cholera outbreaks and other humanitarian crisis such as the response to returnees after post-election chaos, by efficiently coordinating appropriate response strategies. ✯ Designing/developing training curriculum, manuals, participatory tools, and additional Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials in collaboration with others. ✯ Growing organization recognition as CARE Kenya program representative through networking efforts among district, regional, and national forums. ✯ Enabling wide-spread WASH activity/program participation by primary school pupils, teachers, parents and School Management Committee (SMC) members through education and training.
