Feb. 2020 - Jul. 2021Cape Town- Head hunted for the role - Project management, research, advocacy and technical support in the field of police accountability and democratic governance across Africa for a police accountability NGO - Published an article on the role of law enforcement in implementing the AU’s efforts to silence the guns in 2020 for the African Commission Human and People’s Rights 'Police and Human Rights in Africa' newsletter, an African Union publication - Published guidelines on the ethical use of surveillance technologies for South Africa's Information Regulator, to align SA's privacy laws with international norms - Provided technical support to the East African Police Chiefs Cooperation (EAPCCO) in implementing the Common Standards for Policing in East Africa: led the research and analysis for the Republic of Sudan, reviewed data generated by the in-country research team, and drafted a 65-page report on Sudan’s compliance with the Common Standards. The report was signed off by EAPCCO and the Sudanese Police, and the policy recommendations will inform police reform in the new dispensation. - Drafted Terms of Reference for an EU-funded project to enhance the capacity of the South African Police Service (SAPS) to prevent and detect xenophobic violence and related hate crimes; training on the Common Standards for Policing in East Africa; and barriers to women’s entry to the Uganda Police Force - Technical assistance to Police Chiefs and Commissioners from Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso in the development of the 5-year strategic plan of the West African regional platform for policing and human rights (Poli.DH) in partnership with the Danish Institute for Human Rights (DIHR), to develop common standards for rights-based policing in the region - Moderated a webinar on surveillance and the protection of privacy in the midst of a pandemic, with panellists from four countries - Drafted a concept note on surveillance and privacy for a global campaign on C19 and Emergency Powers
