Nelson Ferreira Fontoura is a Brazilian biologist and professor whose academic and research career has been dedicated to the field of aquatic ecology. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences with a specialization in Zoology from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), and earned both his Master's and PhD in Zoology from the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR). His doctoral research focused on fish growth models, specifically examining seasonal temperature variation and proposing a revised von Bertalanffy growth model. Dr. Fontoura served as a professor at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS) from 1989 until his retirement in 2024. Over the course of his academic career, he taught undergraduate and graduate courses in General Ecology, Population Ecology, Applied Ecology, and ecological research methodologies. From 2018 to 2024, he held the position of Director of the Institute for the Environment at PUCRS, where he played a key role in promoting environmental research, sustainability initiatives, and interdisciplinary collaboration. His research has primarily focused on ecological modeling and aquatic ecosystems, with an emphasis on fish biology. His work covers areas such as fish reproduction and growth, habitat modeling, species distribution and abundance, and environmental impact assessments. Dr. Fontoura has supervised numerous master’s and doctoral students and has led or participated in several research projects related to fisheries management, the historical biogeography of ichthyofauna, and ecological sustainability. In addition to his academic and research contributions, he has served on environmental boards and advisory committees, supporting policy development and conservation strategies in Brazil.
