Emirates International SchoolHead of Science
Aug. 2019 - Aug. 2021Dubai, United Arab EmiratesAt EIS Meadows, I served as Primary Science Coordinator for two years. As Science Subject Leader, I was responsible for designing the Science element of all Programmes of Inquiry in the Primary phase. In my first year, I created a comprehensive Science overview for Years 1–6, ensuring cohesive and coherent curriculum coverage. This document supported planning across year groups, enabling students to be challenged, supported and to make accelerated progress through innovative, engaging learning. The implementation of these overviews was highlighted during the school’s DSIB inspection as a key strength, contributing to the school’s rating moving from “Good” to “Very Good.” In Science specifically, the Primary and EY phases showed notable improvements in curriculum design and active learning strategies that promoted authentic, student-led inquiry. As Science Coordinator, I managed a small team of ‘Curriculum Champions'. I led regular meetings with them to ensure consistent improvements in teaching and learning. My role also focused on inspiring the Champions to prioritise and celebrate Science on par with other core subjects. I shared and modelled examples of outstanding practice, including effective Science learning environments, marking and feedback, vocabulary development, opportunities to integrate reading in Science (in line with the UAE’s National Agenda) and efficient use of resources. I also worked closely with the PYP Coordinator to ensure Science provision met British Curriculum outcomes while aligning with the PYP inquiry-led approach; another highlighted strength in the DSIB inspection. Alongside my leadership role, I taught a Primary class where I consistently fostered progress and a love of learning through inquiry-based teaching. My experience across British and IB schools strengthened my mentoring and coaching skills and deepened my understanding of student agency, enabling children to become leaders of their own learning.
