In my role supporting the Humanitarian Access and Safety function, I contributed as part of an essential operational enabler; delivering hands-on support, technical guidance, analysis, and training to ensure the safety and effectiveness of field operations. I had the opportunity to directly assist humanitarian teams in operating safely across high-risk and hard-to-reach areas, ensuring staff were properly equipped with the necessary skills, tools, and procedures to carry out their duties while minimizing risks to personnel and assets. My efforts focused on supporting the implementation of NRC’s global approach to staff safety, secure humanitarian access, and critical incident preparedness and response. This included contributing to the development of context-specific HAS standards and risk mitigation systems tailored to volatile and complex environments. Key responsibilities included: Supporting field teams in planning and executing operations safely and in alignment with local conditions. Promoting principled humanitarian access through negotiation and coordination with all actors, in line with International Humanitarian Law (IHL), to ensure the safe and impartial delivery of assistance. Assisting management teams during incidents and crisis situations to ensure timely and effective response. This experience has deepened my commitment to upholding humanitarian principles while enabling frontline staff to deliver life-saving assistance safely and with dignity.
