Jan. 2011 - Dec. 2011Ebony Lounge, Westlands - NairobiNairobi Hip Hop Rapsody is an event that promotes progressive urban culture in Kenya. This is the only venue in Kenya where the Hip Hop fans can listen and experience the real culture. There was a need to create a space for the hip hop community to converge weekly. The idea was to have different hip hop DJs from various backgrounds and from all over the world showcase their djing style and selection to the audience. Nairobi Hip Hop Rapsody has hosted over 15 DJs so far including G Money from Jamaica, DJ Cortega from Switzerland, DJ Big Bear from the USA, DJ Kace from the Netherlands, DJ Slick, DJ Hypnotiq, DJ Zaq, DJ Gapp, DJ Supreme, DJ. Boom a.k.a. Blinky Bill, are among the Kenyan DJ’s who have spun. This event has become the networking club for hip hop fans in Nairobi. It has been taking place every Thursday since May 2013. It has now grown to host hip hop artists from around the world. Some of the artists who have graced the stage at Nairobi Rapsody are Rabbit, Octopizzo, Khaligraph, Muthoni Drummer Queen and Jemedari, all from Kenya, HHP and TUMI from South Africa, Paleface from Finland, MC Matre from Los Angeles, and recently Talib Kweli who brought out over 700 Nairobi Hip Hop Heads to the club. Part of our plan is for Nairobi Rapsody is to grow into a quarterly outdoor street party, semi-annual or annual festival at a larger venue. Nairobi Rapsody being the only place in Nairobi that celebrates the essence of true hip-hop culture. We endeavor to bring true and classic hip hop that takes it back to the roots of the culture. After doing this for two years, we want to elevate the experience of our patrons and fans. We want to bring New York to the door steps in Nairobi. We want Nairobi to enjoy the New York experience. With a successful Talib Kweli show that pulled 700 great hip hop fans Nairobi Rapsody has already made contact with New York artists such as Mosdef, Common, Erykah badu, Nas, and Dead Prez about future gigs.
