Liberty Mutual InsurancePCT-Complex Litigation Paralegal
Sep. 2010 - Sep. 2014Carmel, IndianaI handled complex, high exposure civil litigation remotely for the Chicago office. I investigated the facts once the Claims Dept. received notice of a suit; drafted & finalized all discovery/most pleadings; interviewed clients; coordinated the scheduling of depositions; maintained a total paperless environment in which the uploading of key documents & pleadings in a timely manner was imperative to working remotely; & handled various administrative tasks such as billing time, paying invoices, compiling & adhering to litigation budgets, and scheduling deadlines for numerous cases. I worked on the high exposure civil cases & distributed the workers’ compensation & smaller exposure cases to the other paralegals in the Carmel office & oversaw/assisted them with the cases I delegated. Overall, I handled any part of the litigation process. I also coordinated & developed settlements, which included but was not limited to working with other carriers that had liens on any funds; reviewing medical records in order to compile expenses; ensuring the validity of expenses; calculating & auditing various benefits as they relate to the case or settlement such as workers’ compensation, disability, lost wages, future earning power, etc…; retaining & coordinating the use of expert witnesses; coordinating the subpoenaing of records while abiding by & utilizing various regulations (FOIA, HIPPA, etc…); and ensuring that confidentiality, special service instructions, & all policies & procedures are followed at all times throughout the resolution of the claims process. Additionally, I coordinated with Claims Adjusters to meet any & all needs they had for resolving their cases from obtaining signed HIPPA authorizations to tracking down less than cooperative clients. Simply put, I made sure the Chicago paralegals had work to keep them busy, met all deadlines & completed all tasks properly, produced a quality work product, & assisted with any issues or questions from the team.
