Jan. 2016 - Jul. 2019Greater Los Angeles AreaAs part of the five-person executive leadership team at this statewide advocacy organization, I helped to champion reform legislation affecting the 60,000 children in foster care in California. Working in partnership with policy attorneys, elected officials, and community partners, I advanced progressive foster care reforms, including equity for relative caregivers, extended foster care benefits for youth "aging out", and enhanced child care options to help low-income families achieve stability. I compiled and edited the first statewide guide to the new 2017 resource family approval process, to help align child welfare agencies across California in terms of best practices to support permanency. I also created the Advocacy Academy, a program that trained current and former foster youth in self-advocacy skills so that those with first-hand experience of the system might join in promoting improvements.
