Cumbria County CouncilPolitician
May. 2017Cumbria, England, United KingdomRepresenting six and half thousand residents in Eden, I initiate and lead on strategic priorities for my division, deal with individual casework and advocate for the community in the council and with partner organisations at a local and national level. The successful delivery of a half-million-pound project to reinstate historic setts on the main street in Alston sees the fruition of one of a series of major investment projects in my division that I have spearheaded during my term. As a member of the strategic local committee, I work closely with officers and strategic partners throughout the year to identify potential internal and external funding streams to maximise service delivery, and thus the benefit to the community. I have become well versed in being able to take often complex concepts and translate them into clear, easy-to-understand ideas in order to garner support and buy-in, which in my experience is at least half of the work involved in getting something successfully over the line. During my four years as Cumbria Health Scrutiny Chair for the council, I worked hard to move the board from what was a more confrontational approach, to one of collaboration and shared values, encouraging open and challenging dialogue whilst respecting personal and organisational values and boundaries. To bring the most polarised views into the same room, and over a period of time, watch individuals explore not only their unique voice but their shared vision and coalesce as one team is incredibly satisfying, the experience of which underpins much of my natural optimism, often in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds. Little is more polarising than politics, yet I am usually able to cut across those surface divisions and support people in digging deeper to find common ground.
