Jun. 2019 - Aug. 2019Malawi• Worked on a team to implement a new conservation expedition for high school and university students. Independently developed and presented a lecture on avian field methods, and conducted a new point count survey project, leading students on surveys. Trained students on mist-net set up and principles of banding including handling, identification, morphometrics, and data collection. Responsible for troubleshooting issues in the field regarding equipment and human-wildlife interactions. Managed datasets, recorded protocols, and documented effort for future research.
Biological Technician- Crew Lead
GEOLOGICAL SURVEY, UNITED STATES DEPT OFBiological Technician- Crew Lead
Sep. 2018 - May. 2019Hanapepe, HI• Crew lead responsible for supervising volunteer field assistants on a mosquito population dynamics study in the remote Alakai Wilderness Preserve. Established initial trap grid and collected adult mosquitoes using C02 and gravid traps. Conducted larval mosquito stream surveys and organized biological samples. Maintained equipment to ensure trap function, regularly hiking with a 50lb pack over steep, challenging terrain in adverse tropical conditions. Coordinated logistics, prepared, and conducted helicopter sling load operations. Responsible for data entry and management in Excel and ArcGIS and creating maps.
Field Associate
Kauai Forest Bird Recovery ProjectField Associate
Sep. 2017 - Jun. 2019Kauai County, Hawaii, United States• Assisted with research and conservation of native Hawaiian forest birds on Kauaʻi. Work was focused on three critically endangered species: ʻakikiki, ʻakekee, and puaiohi. Responsible for setting up mist nets, extracting and banding birds, taking blood samples, and assisting with attaching leg loop harnesses for radio transmitters. Used telemetry to track akekee and find nests. Accurately re-sighted color bands, searched for nests, and monitored nests with poles and wireless cameras. Assisted in egg collection operations for the San Diego Zoo conservation breeding program, and native forest bird point count surveys. Hiked and navigated safely in remote areas of challenging, steep and wet cloud-forest terrain with a GPS and maps. Followed safety regulations when working in and around helicopters. Camped in the field for up to 10 days in a row with a small field crew. • Independent research project: pilot study to capture images of feral cats to describe occupancy within the remaining endangered forest birds’ habitat (2017-2018). Served as crew lead on field trips in 2019; responsible for gear, logistics, and data collection. Deployed telemetry towers and downloaded transmitter data from Lotek receivers. Prepared daily work plans, coordinated field operations, budget accounting, and fleet maintenance. Used MS Access and MS Excel to enter and proof data, download and upload GPS waypoints into GIS, and update research method protocols. Engaged in public outreach including writing the project’s annual newsletter, coordinated the Christmas bird count, and presented information at local schools and events.
Avian Biological Technician- Kupu CLDP Program (Americorps)
Kauai National Wildlife Refuge ComplexAvian Biological Technician- Kupu CLDP Program (Americorps)
Oct. 2016 - Aug. 2017Hanalei, HI• Designed, conducted, and presented an independent research pilot project investigating the influence of habitat features on nest success and depredation of 40+ endangered Hawaiian common gallinule nests using Reconyx motion detection cameras. Lead technician monitoring 140 endangered nēnē (Hawaiian goose) and 125 mōlī (Laysan albatross) breeding pairs; including nest searching, mapping, weekly checks, band re-sights, brood classifications, data entry and management, summary statistics, and year-end reporting on phenology and reproductive success rates. Assisted in capturing and banding nēnē and mōlī, followed safety protocols, and coordinated banding sweeps, access, and logistics with staff, partners, and taro farmers. • Lead technician for responding to sick and injured sea and waterbirds. Conducted disease surveillance surveys to detect birds affected by avian botulism in taro farms and wetland units. Captured birds, administered botulism antitoxin shots and gave first aid in preparation for transport to the wildlife rehabilitation center. Trained volunteers on botulism survey protocols and coordinated with taro farmers on avian botulism response. • Coordinated and served as compiler for Christmas Bird Count. Trained, coordinated schedules, and led volunteers on various surveys and digital photo review. Orally presented biological updates, including breeding bird status and avian botulism outbreaks at Refuge staff and volunteer meetings.
Research Intern
Arizona Game and Fish DepartmentResearch Intern
Jan. 2016 - Apr. 2016Phoenix, AZ- Conducted field research on desert bighorn sheep with an emphasis on the risk of predation by mountain lions. - Hiked up to 15 miles a day over extremely steep and challenging desert terrain in remote areas while carrying a heavy pack. Responsible for driving state owned 4WD and OHV vehicles on unproved roads and trails. - Used telemetry equipment to track focal individuals and obtain visual confirmation of group size and demographic composition. Gained experience glassing for large mammals, using spotting scopes, and recording mammalian behavioral observations. - Investigated mountain lion GPS location clusters to identify kill sites and type of prey. - Used GPS devices, a compass, and maps to navigate to habitat points, and used a cover pole and standard methodology to measure obstruction by vegetation and topography. - Other duties included data entry in Excel, investigating VHF mortality signals, radiocollar retrieval, checking on camera traps, equipment maintenance, and coordinating with supervisors and department personnel. - Shared a field trailer or camped while working up to 13 hour days in the field for up to five days at a time.

Jun. 2015 - Aug. 2016Blythe, CA- Conducted field research on Western Yellow-billed Cuckoos on the lower Colorado River. Used call playback surveys to determine presence or absence of Yellow-billed Cuckoos while recording incidental avian species. - Implemented nest searching techniques for a federally threatened/state endangered species. Monitored nests by climbing ladders, using mirror poles, banding nestlings, and taking detailed field notes. - Re-sighted color bands and used telemetry to locate individuals. - Recorded detailed behavioral breeding observations in Trimble units and field notebook, using GPS units to navigate through dense vegetation and driving 4WD vehicles to access remote sites. - Assisted in banding Yellow-billed Cuckoos: set up canopy poles and mist nets, processed adults and nestlings, attached radio transmitters, and recorded data. - Familiar with using Pathfinder to upload, proof, and edit data collected in the field. Summarized daily activities into reports and completed documentation forms in MS Excel. - Used ArcMap to project locations collected in the field and map territories. Additional data management responsibilities in 2016 include using MS Access and ArcMap to organize, proof, and export spatial data. - Worked safely and efficiently in desert conditions, with temperatures ranging from 25-40 degrees Celsius.
