Jan. 1999It's hard to think about a documentary without calling on Alex (Alexandre Lima) to collaborate. Self-taught, he's worked as an assistant director, directed, photographed, and ultimately became a great documentary editor. Besides editing, he writes scripts and constructs the stories, not only on the island but also in pre-production discussions or while filming. Alex reconstructed and re-edited my entire film "Jair Rodrigues, Deixa que digam" (Jair Rodrigues, Deixa que digam), and gave me another film that was subsequently selected for the 2020 "É tudo verdade" (It's All True) and nominated for the 2021 ABC Award for Best Editing. He's a cinephile with a vast cinematic culture and has a keen understanding of cinematic languages. He's well-traveled, has lived in different countries, speaks languages, and is at ease anywhere, as he arrives slowly but surely with an ethical approach, which is essential in filmmaking, especially nonfiction. Besides the film about Jair Rodrigues, he edited the series "À Mesa," co-directed by Rossana Foglia and myself, and photographed the film "Brizola" (in post-production), co-directed by Jean-Claude Bernadet and myself. This year, he became my advisee at UFSCAR, with his master's project, "Memorial Guerrilha do Araguaia," where he will direct a documentary project about the Araguaia guerrillas. His political, social, and environmental engagement is evident in Alex's filmmaking. Bus 174, Estamira, Garapa, and Curumim are some of the other films he has collaborated on throughout his career. In 2023, he was in the Amazon filming riverside communities, and in 2024, he filmed with the Kuikuro people in the Ipatse village. In addition to directing, editing, and photographing documentaries, Alex works on assembling experienced teams for all stages of documentary production. Finally, although Alex is a great conversationalist, he never gives up his silence and his space. This is essential for anyone working in art.
