Hospital Gregorio MarañónArt Therapist
Sep. 2016 - Jul. 2017Madrid, Community of Madrid, SpainAs an Art Therapy Intern working in partnership with the Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer at Hospital Universitario Gregorio Marañón, I supported adult and geriatric patients undergoing cancer treatment—many of whom were in critical or terminal stages. My caseload included individuals from vulnerable populations, including migrants from Venezuela, Morocco, and other regions where access to care was limited or nonexistent. In this high-impact, emotionally charged environment, I facilitated therapeutic art sessions designed to reduce anxiety, restore dignity, and offer patients a non-verbal outlet for processing trauma, identity, and mortality. My interventions often became a bridge between fear and acceptance, especially for patients facing the end of life without family or social support systems. While the emotional toll of patient death was real and frequent, I remained grounded in presence, compassion, and resilience. These experiences taught me how to hold space for both suffering and beauty—developing clinical maturity, emotional regulation, and cultural sensitivity far beyond what can be taught in a classroom. Through each drawing, collage, or sculpted object, patients reconnected with their stories, their voice, and their humanity. It was in this space—at the intersection of art, advocacy, and empathy—that I discovered my deepest purpose as a therapist and educator.
