Jan. 2021Paarl, Western Cape, South AfricaIn 2021, I founded the Evergreen Education Centre after recognising a critical need for high-quality education for teenagers who experience barriers to learning. At the centre, we use current Inclusive Education practices to assist students in accessing the mainstream curriculum from Grade 7 to 12. In addition, we design learning programmes for students who are unable to access the same curriculum as their age-cohorts. The centre has grown from 4 to 14 students in 19 months and continues to expand. The centre has recently been registered as an independent school at the WCED. The centre also focuses on pre- and in-service teacher training and development, with a particular emphasis on Inclusive Education Practices for Mainstream and Special Needs Education.

As part of my research, I conducted training needs analyses at these institutions. This was to develop support structures and teacher education opportunities that were relevant and could be implemented practically in each context. I worked with accreditation boards such as SETA and SACE to provide a credible attendance certificate to teachers.
As part of my counselling responsibilities, I communicated with a variety of experts to offer social-emotional and academic support for students and teachers. Additionally I participated in the multidisciplinary teams that discussed and created learning programmes for the specific needs of individual students.

I worked with other specialists, such as speech therapists, occupational therapists, educational psychologists, and paediatricians, to coordinate services for students who required specialised assistance.
