System Design Engineer
United Space AllianceSystem Design Engineer
Jan. 2007 - Apr. 2011As a System Design Engineer I am responsible for new and existing designs involving Orbiter Access and Multi-Use Ground Handling Equipment for the Space Shuttle Program. As a Mechanical Design Engineer I assist with design development and drafting for Orbiter and External Tank Systems. Projects: Lean Six Sigma Project – Design Certification Consistency: Currently, the space shuttle ground support equipment design certification process is not consistent among System Design Engineers (SDEs) and makes for a lengthy review process and frequent rework. As a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt, I improved these issues by leading weekly team meetings, maintaining continuity, and achieving goals to positively impact the certification process. With input from key stakeholders and team members, I created a new process that includes a ‘check-point’ for the SDE organization to verify the certification process is being followed accurately. I have also developed templates to increase consistency and reduce rework. Position-Locking on the Service Module (SM) Internal Access Platform: The SM Internal Access is an export controlled project. The platform itself rides on a circular rail system to provide 360 degree access for technicians to perform work. In cases where rotation must be restricted due to flight hardware placement, I used her creativity to design a method to positionally lock the Internal Access Platform. I also provided analysis and drafting assistance for this project. Jib Crane Installation for Logistics Packing & Crating: The installation of this new shop aid reduces the number of manual lifts for technicians, further resulting in a lower risk of injury to personnel and damage to flight hardware. I served as the SDE and was responsible for coordinating a multidisciplinary team, researching and selecting equipment, and producing and releasing design documents, plans, and specifications.
Reliability Engineer
United Space AllianceReliability Engineer
Jan. 2004 - Jan. 2007As Mission Assurance Engineer my primary responsibility was the performance of failure modes and effects analyses, hazard analyses, and safety risk assessments on ground system hardware. I assured design modification activities and operational process changes satisfy Space Shuttle Program safety, reliability, and quality requirements. Projects: Space Shuttle Main Engines Heated GN2 Purge System & Main Propulsion System Helium Distribution: This analysis identified critical functions and redundancies, and eliminated single failure points that could lead to loss of or damage to the Space Shuttle. As Mission Assurance Engineer, I utilized analytical methods to assist in the decision process for risk identification and mitigation on the SSMEs. I was also responsible for updating critical functions associated with the legacy control system to a new digital communication system. External Tank Spray Foam Cart: This system provides a portable means to repair areas of the ET near the aft hard point (side opposite orbiter location). I identified potential hazards to personnel, including exposure to hazardous materials, ignition of foam, and over pressurization of flex hoses during the spraying operation. This directed the personal protective equipment (PPE) that technicians must wear while operating the spray foam cart, and required a warning in the Operations & Maintenance Instructions of the risk of spontaneous combustion of the foam if applied incorrectly. Lean Six Sigma Project – Safety Engineering Procedures Review Process: This project focused on two goals – reducing the variation in the implementation of safety requirements and improving the customer review cycle time. By using Lean Six Sigma tools, the team developed Reviewer Guidelines and a priority sorting tool. I led the development of the priority sorting tool. This tool allowed documents that are more urgent to be worked first which increased customer satisfaction.
Systems Engineer (Intern)
United Space AllianceSystems Engineer (Intern)
Aug. 2003 - Jan. 2004I began her career at United Space Alliance as an intern in the Fixed Crane department. Following the STS-107 Columbia disaster I participated in STS-114 Return to Flight efforts. I played a key role in assisting the decision making process to eliminate unused equipment at Pad B that could cause damage to the Space Shuttle prior to and during launch. My general role in the department was to assist engineers in maintaining, troubleshooting, and solving mechanical and electrical problems with cranes, doors and platforms throughout the Space Center. I was responsible for converting Operation & Maintenance Instruction documents into Job Plans, and a key contribution was creating a database for Notes and Cautions for the department which provided a more efficient way to create Job Plans. I also assisted with platform moves in the Vehicle Assembly Building to roll out the Space Shuttle to the Launch Pad.
