Global Marketing Communications Manager
BiD Network FoundationGlobal Marketing Communications Manager
Apr. 2008 - Apr. 2011Amsterdam, The NetherlandsAfter three years at Nabuur I was ready to return to my communication & marketing roots. BiD Network, another foundation carrying out activities in developing countries, was looking for a Marketing expert. This position encompassed all my areas of knowledge and expertise: Multicultural marketing, branding, multilingual editing, international network, specially in Latin America. My main task was that of carrying out an extensive overhaul of corporate communications, branding, house style and media outreach, enhancing name recognition and visibility of BiD Network, locally and internationally with private and public entities and partners. This helped to secure funding and increase attendance to their main event the SME Marketplace from 350 to 650 people within a 2 year period.
Local Community Officer
NABUURLocal Community Officer
Nov. 2004 - Mar. 2008Amersfoort, The NetherlandsWhile in Italy I joined this Dutch initiative as a volunteer and then moved to the Netherlands to join them formally whilst being close to my elderly parents. Nabuur helped organised communities in developing countries to find answers to their local problems that did not involve receiving financial resources as part of the solutions. This meant the communities had to be very clear what request for assistance they would put out there for the volunteers to help. My role was to help these communities to shift from asking for funds, to making better use of the knowledge and expertise available online and within their own resources, as well as supporting them in communicating the results to their respective communities. This was in the early stages of mobile development, and internet coverage in those countries was scarce and expensive. Nevertheless I managed to organise 145 communities, train the representatives to train new community leaders. And today I have the same approach with the clients I work with: What is the best we can do with what you have, and how can we do better.
Manager International Marketing & Promotions
SorrentourManager International Marketing & Promotions
Sep. 2002 - Jan. 2005Sorrento, ItalyItaly has always found a way to disrupt my life. First when I won the scholarship to study Marketing for SMEs. Later when through my international connections I was asked if I was willing to move to Italy and join this Event & Congress organiser located in the lovely Gulf of Naples. They were looking to boost their international clientele and needed somebody with expertise in events and marketing, who was multilingual, organised and who loved coffee. Needless to say it was the coffee what made me say YES!
Account Executive Global Media Relations
Dix & EatonAccount Executive Global Media Relations
Oct. 1999 - Oct. 2001Cleveland, Ohio, USAThe largest PR agency between New York and Chicago had a visionary in the person of Gary Wells, head of media relations. Back in 1999 people were busy with the Y2K virus and not with a world where technology rendered frontiers futile. Gary was an early adopter of globalisation and always promoted this thought among the agency’s clients. Not an easy thing. One of their clients had an important event in Caracas, and Gary reached out to Estima for support. The rest is history. They were happy with my ability to seamlessly jump from Spanish to English and back to Spanish, not to forget Italian and Dutch. They appreciated my organizational and planning skills and the fact that I was able to communicate throughout the world without causing major cultural incidents. And so I became an Account Executive Global Relations. 9/11 put an end to my tenure in the USA as companies turned inward instead of global and I moved to the Netherlands where most of my family had relocated as result of the political restlessness in Venezuela (my parents were Dutch and had migrated to Venezuela in 1956).
Sr Account Executive
EstimaSr Account Executive
Jun. 1997 - Oct. 1999Caracas, VenezuelaBeginning 1997 I returned to Venezuela as my residence permit in Curacao expired. The experience of account executive in my last position left me wanting for more. I craved for opportunities to continue identifying the real needs clients have and how to best address these needs in respect of their way of thinking, their budgets and corporate programs. Estima, then the only pure PR boutique in Venezuela (PR was mainly done by advertising agencies), had an opening for a Senior Consultant with expertise in Branding and Marketing. My biggest gain here was acquiring experience in go-to-market strategies for audiences that are difficult to reach (as in they-dunno -wanna-hear-what-you-have-to-say difficult).
Senior Communication and Marketing Consultant
Horvers, Dubislav & PartnersSenior Communication and Marketing Consultant
Mar. 1995 - Mar. 1997Curacao, Netherlands AntillesThe refinery stopped hiring expatriates so I was looking for my next challenge. HD&P was the first agency in Curacao that offered a full range of communication services: Marketing, PR, Design, Advertising, and was recruiting Senior Account Executives. My original objective after completing my studies was entering the world of advertising. HD&P was my dream come true. Here I learned crisis communications as I was sent to St Maarten in the aftermath of Hurricane Luis in 1995. On Curacao I took part in a large branding project for the recently privatised garbage collecting company. Both projects meant working in changing (corporate) environments with audiences remarkable for their cultural diversity, high level of distrust and different languages.
Public Relations
Refineria I.S.L.A. CuracaoPublic Relations
Dec. 1992 - Dec. 1994Curacao, Netherlands AntillesWhilst at Nestlé I became aware of an opening with Refinery Isla. At that time my passion lay with working in the oil industry, combine this with living on Curaçao - otherwise known as the place where the Dutch are relaxed - and I was living the dream. As the liaison officer I worked with a diverse range of stakeholders. Diverse in cultural aspects and in the level of distrust that - at times - needed to be overcome. This is taught me how to define the problems and solutions in their words.
Institutional Relations Coordinator

Mar. 1991 - Nov. 1992Caracas, VenezuelaAfter my first job I landed a scholarship to study a Masters Degree in Italy. As I ‘only’ spoke three languages at the time, I loved the challenge to study in Italy. On my return to Venezuela I wanted to stay in an international environment, I was lucky to see Nestlé had an opening where my skills and experience were a great fit. One of the best lessons learned during my time here, was that my interest lies in communication with external clients. When put in charge of finding the next venue for a touring exhibition, I put all my networking skills into practice resulting in finding the right facility and sponsors for the interactive exhibition.
