Nov. 2010 - Oct. 2019Hayward, CAWhen I was first hired, it was mainly to rework the look of their primary website, and to create material the sales staff could use. However, as the company grew, so did my responsibilities. One of my first big tasks was to make a more legible and navigable pricing guide for our sellers across the country, and this required asking what they needed vs. what was currently available. As we shifted into e-commerce, I helped to emphasize that it was necessary for the company to change away from traditional black background images to white background. This change also allowed the company to start producing lifestyle imagery to better display their products. Over time, I split my work serving both sales and e-commerce, and eventually others with graphic arts talents were brought on board. This gave me teammates that allowed for more brainstorming, and ultimately gave me the ability to split up and delegate work as needed. Thus were the beginnings of a small but effective art department.

Jan. 2007 - Dec. 2009Hayward, California, United StatesI was hired to be this start-up’s dedicated graphic designer, which specialized in a unique form of outdoor advertising. Not only was I responsible for providing the salespeople collateral material, I was also tasked with oftentimes creating the ads themselves, or at the very least helping the client create their own. To this end, I also created a master note set to help out first-time designers. The business was so new that I found myself using my skills in different areas, from designing mock-ups and media packages, to creating the actual templates used for printing. When not doing graphics work for Fence Media, I created collateral for Atlantis Fence & Ironworks, the parent company. This included postcards, tri-fold mailers, and the like.

May. 2003 - Sep. 2006Hayward, California, United StatesI was brought on originally to help create a website that would be more serviceable to the public at large. The then head of ACMAD wanted to give the agency a more public face in light of the West Nile Virus, and the website was going to play a major part in that. During my time, the site evolved into a one-stop center for mosquito and West Nile awareness, offering such services as reporting dead birds, requesting a technician, and offering mosquito fish for backyard ponds. In a pattern that would repeat itself throughout my career, we would find other jobs that needed doing, such as updating their printed materials, and ultimately working on a bus poster campaign. I also trained ACMAD staff on software that allowed them to update the website’s monthly information sections.
