Oranjezicht City FarmExcursion Asssistant
Dec. 2015 - Feb. 2016Cape Town, South AfricaThis organic inner city farm often hosts school groups (ages between 5 and 10) who come for outings in order to educate them on the wonders of growing food. As an excursion assistant, it is our responsibility to facilitate the education aspect of the history of the farm and the concept of organic food, through play, treasure hunt exercises, story telling, as well as allowing them to pick and eat a seasonal vegetable from the farm gardens. Group management is key and this is achieved through a balance in the teacher / student dialogue, allowing them to draw on their own frames of reference in order to understand and contribute to the experience. Pace is important too - the ability to read the group and know when they are ready to move on to the next chapter of the excursion, as boredom encourages misbehaviour which in turn, creates distraction. Most children only understand food within a supermarket context, and so by engaging them in a fun and stimulating way through play and a tour of the farm, allowing them to touch and smell and taste things for themselves, ask questions and give answers and reason creatively, we bring their awareness to the origins of food and the excitement of understanding.
