Private English Conversation Tutor to Italians
Self-employedPrivate English Conversation Tutor to Italians
Jan. 2020 - May. 2022OnlineMeeting Italian students online, 1 on 1, I guide them through 45 minute lessons of English conversation. Focusing on topics and language points that THEY enjoy, learning doesn't feel like learning! Encouraging them to talk as much as possible, very soon the shyness and discomfort disappears, and when they're more relaxed, they learn and retain so much more. Understanding Italian means I understand how Italians translate and the obstacles they face in learning English - but these are easily overcome with a bit of patience and commitment to practice. A rewarding activity for both of us!

Literacy Tutor
Shine LiteracyLiteracy Tutor
Jan. 2016 - Mar. 2016Cape Town, South AfricaAs a volunteer with SHINE I assisted in their schools programme where students who have been identified as struggling with reading and writing skills require one on one attention in order to increase their ability and confidence. Often in poorly subsidised and overcrowded schools teachers are not always able to give the necessary individual attention to each student. Tutors such as myself provide this attention through creative language games and exercises that encourage learning. As a tutor, I had the opportunity to work with the same students each week, working together through areas of struggle, whether that be spelling, writing, pronunciation or reading, as for most students English is not their first language. The focus is on creating a calm and supportive environment in order for children to have the confidence to try their hand at reading and writing, and to facilitate independent engagement with books.
Excursion Asssistant
Oranjezicht City FarmExcursion Asssistant
Dec. 2015 - Feb. 2016Cape Town, South AfricaThis organic inner city farm often hosts school groups (ages between 5 and 10) who come for outings in order to educate them on the wonders of growing food. As an excursion assistant, it is our responsibility to facilitate the education aspect of the history of the farm and the concept of organic food, through play, treasure hunt exercises, story telling, as well as allowing them to pick and eat a seasonal vegetable from the farm gardens. Group management is key and this is achieved through a balance in the teacher / student dialogue, allowing them to draw on their own frames of reference in order to understand and contribute to the experience. Pace is important too - the ability to read the group and know when they are ready to move on to the next chapter of the excursion, as boredom encourages misbehaviour which in turn, creates distraction. Most children only understand food within a supermarket context, and so by engaging them in a fun and stimulating way through play and a tour of the farm, allowing them to touch and smell and taste things for themselves, ask questions and give answers and reason creatively, we bring their awareness to the origins of food and the excitement of understanding.
Performer & Dance Teacher
FreelancePerformer & Dance Teacher
Jan. 2013 - Dec. 2017Cape Town, South Africa / Basel, Switzerland / London, United KingdomSince graduating from University of Cape Town in 2009, I have performed for various dance companies in Cape Town and London. My primary focus has always been ballet, but I have had the privilege of working with many contemporary choreographers on a variety of independent projects. This opportunity of moving between differing companies and choreographers created versatility and the ability to adapt to the creative and practical needs of that current environment, extending myself physically, mentally and creatively. Teaching is a means of exploring my own experience of dance, in conjunction with sharing my knowledge and passion so that others may nurture their relationship with dance. My passion is for teaching teenagers and adults, not only introducing them to ballet, but also working on a higher level of personal coaching. I taught predominantly in Cape Town (children through to adults) as well as in Surrey and Kent (children through to adults) and in Basel, Switzerland teaching open advanced ballet classes.
Co-Founder & Teacher
Ballet on KloofCo-Founder & Teacher
Jan. 2012 - Dec. 2013Cape Town Area, South AfricaFounded this growing adult ballet school to create a means for adults to discover or return to the wonder of ballet and dance in an intelligent, fun and nurturing environment. Stressing the importance of the connection between the mind and body, as well as the tangible possibility of being capable of doing ballet (when many see it as unreachable), the focus of my classes was not only to teach technique, but to challenge the mind and build a foundation of positive affirmation. This leads to a sense of self belief and achievement relative to something that is seen as elite, intimidating and often unattainable. Creative progression through creative structuring encourages interest and commitment, motivation and enjoyment. I left the School in the capable hands of my colleague as I moved to the United Kingdom at the end of 2013, to further my performing career.
