Sep. 2014 - Jan. 2015Hamilton Contact CentreMy third placement on the graduate scheme was in the customer contact centre in Hamilton. I was managing a team of 12 Partners. Varying between John Lewis Partners and agency staff. Ultimately responsible for ensuring a team was focussed on delivering the KPI's in a fast paced customer environment. I demonstrated during my time in the contact centre my leadership skills in helping new team members become familiar with the businesses complex systems and achieve their KPI's on a consistent basis. I also set up the Black Friday working group looking at operational priorities on the single busiest day of the year in the contact centre. Black Friday was a huge day for the business and broke many sales records and I am proud of the small part I played in helping us achieve this success.

Mar. 2014 - Aug. 2014Newcastle upon Tyne, United KingdomI moved to Newcastle as SM Jewellery. Jewellery is a key performer in the assortment at John Lewis Newcastle and was immediately identified as a risk. I have delivered both great customer service and great sales. The department has moved from strength to strength and is much more operationally efficient than when I joined. Whilst in Newcastle I again demonstrated my capabilities as was asked to cover an eight-week secondment as OMS Home. This allowed me to further demonstrate my skills at managing my peers. The experience was invaluable as it allowed me to gain great insight into managing section managers post FMS. Having a branch influence was something that was very well suited to my skill set. The opportunity has also allowed me to identify where I need to develop. I feel this is the most important thing of the experience, as I now clearly know what is required to be a great leader in John Lewis. Also during my time at John Lewis Newcastle I also organised Partnership Day, this was very well received by the branch and allowed me to demonstrate exactly how I could deliver the chairman’s vision.
Retail Management Graduate

Sep. 2013 - Aug. 2016NationwideI was successful in obtaining a place on the John Lewis Graduate Scheme in August 2013. The scheme is fiercely competitive and currently is seen as the 9th best graduate employer according to the ‘Times 100 graduate employers.’ In getting a place on this scheme I have been very fortunate to gain exposure to senior leaders in the business and unique opportunities. During my first six months I took part in a project for the buying office allowing me to gain insight into the buying function in Retail. In my current six months I am involved in a Personnel project looking at the generational tensions that exist in a business that has been around as long as the John Lewis Partnership has. I continue to seek such opportunities to increase my experiences across the Partnership.

Sep. 2013 - Feb. 2014Cambridge, United KingdomI began my first graduate placement in Cambridge as a trainee SM on Fashion Accessories within 8 weeks I had demonstrated my capabilities based on my previous retail experience both inside and outside of John Lewis and I was promoted to SM Stock Management. This was extremely challenging but very rewarding working through peak in a branch that turns over 100 million pounds at Christmas. I learnt about the supply chain function and the importance of stock management to the selling floor. Being part of the commercial support function was immensely rewarding, challenging but insightful. I learnt so much about how the wider operation works and this has enabled me to become a better selling SM. I ran stocktake for the branch and this resulted in the best shrinkage result Cambridge has ever had, this was down to my great planning and attention to detail. During this time I was also asked to step to DM Stock Management, for the four months due to FMS. This was extremely challenging but helped me adapt and refine my leadership style, as I was managing my peers.
Leadership Development Intern
John LewisLeadership Development Intern
Jul. 2012 - Aug. 2012Leicester, United KingdomLeadership Development Internship In the summer 2012 I applied to do a six week internship with John Lewis with a view to increase my skills in how to manage, commercial awareness and financial analysis. During my initial two weeks I spent time learning about how the non-selling aspect of the business works. I learnt a lot about logistics and how operations were run. During my final four weeks I was part of a management team in charge of 30 employees (partners). This is where I learnt the most about how to manage people, their expectations and organise them on a daily basis to maximise efficiency. During my time at John Lewis I obtained a keen interest in how the finances worked, it was identified as a personal strength, as I was able to analyse financial figures competently due to my process driven nature. During my six weeks I was also set a project to improve the business. I implemented a training program about a system that was being used ineffectively, the success was unprecedented and is now being adapted to be rolled out nationwide.

Jul. 2011 - Aug. 2013Nottingham, United KingdomI promote Samsung products within John Lewis department stores. My main focus is increase Samsung TV sales. This involves high levels of product specific knowledge, which I have amassed since starting this position. Customer service is critical to the success of this initiative. Using my vast retail customer service knowledge, I have helped increase the overall sales figures for this concessionaire. My duties include liaising with the head office on a daily basis providing feedback, number of sales, improvements to sales campaigns, etc. etc. This places a huge responsibility on me, which I enjoy tremendously and requires good organisational skills as we are always working to strict deadlines. The other aspect of the role also involves training store staff with the latest developments in Samsung TV's. During my time in store I have built a fantastic rapport and trust with store staff which has allowed me to deliver high quality training. Finally I also act as the weekend merchandiser, this part of my role means I have to ensure that the Samsung brand is being represented to the highest standard at all times.

John Lewis PartnershipCustomer Service Assistant
Nov. 2005 - Aug. 2010Peterborough, United KingdomI manned a till which generated up to £30,000 revenue per shift. We were set weekly cash handling targets. Being a high performing partner, I always hit my targets comfortably. The other aspects of this role were to deal with customer queries, issues, etc. I found diplomacy, a caring nature, and a good listening ear were perhaps the key ingredients with customer service. I enjoyed this aspect of the role, as I had direct contact with the general public. Dealing with different customers every day at the busiest times of the year resulted in my customer service skills continually improving.
