Senior Consultant
Simeka TWSSenior Consultant
Jan. 1999 - Jan. 2005I served as a key client contact person, as well as the project manager of large-scale communication strategy projects, on both a national and southern African region level. This included extensive media liaison activities. I also arranged a number of large regional and international events. One of my most valuable learning experiences during this period has been working with journalists from across the southern African region on a number of interesting projects related to development. During this time I also had the opportunity to travel widely in Southern Africa, as well as in Ghana, Rwanda and Nigeria. I spent a 6-month sabbatical at McGill University in Montréal, Canada (2001); and participated in conferences on Venture Capital and Workplace Wellness in Canada on separate occasions. I spent a short internship in Washington DC, at one of the world’s largest Lobbying & PR companies – Burston Marsteller (2000). Clients of Simeka TWS that I served included Uthingo Management (the then National Lottery Operator); the Development Bank of Southern Africa; the South African Reserve Bank and the W. K. Kellogg Foundation.

Senior Manager: Communication
Department of Communication, South AfricaSenior Manager: Communication
Mar. 1998 - Aug. 1998Pretoria Area, South AfricaIn early 1998 I was headhunted to join the newly established 'National Y2K Decision Support Centre' within the Department of Communication in Pretoria. The NYDSC was an advisory body to the Presidency and Cabinet in all matters relating to the millennium 'switch-over' that was seen as a potential threat to the computer technology industry. I decided to accept this position, despite the fact that I really enjoyed my work at the Office of the Auditor-General, since it was my long-term goal to establish an own communication consulting agency, and the Y2K-project would be an excellent opportunity to prove my mettle within the field of communication strategy. I left after initiating and coordinating the 'National Y2K Awareness Day', which culminated in an event in the Castle at the Cape of Good Hope, at which the then President of South Africa, Mr Thabo Mbeki, was the keynote speaker. I remember that I had to step in as the MC of this event, because the CEO of the NY2KDSC suddenly withdrew! As part of the total campaign I designed a National Y2K Control Centre and arranged sponsorship by a Japannese technology company for this state-of-the-art media facility where the 'status of Y2K-readiness' was monitored on a 24/7 basis. The control centre was designed and installed in record-time and became the pride of the campaign. I left the campaign in September 1998 in order to set up my own communication agency, "World of Work Consulting CC".
Centre Manager: Communication & Publishing
Office of the Auditor-General, South AfricaCentre Manager: Communication & Publishing
May. 1997 - Feb. 1998PretoriaWorking at the Office of the Auditor-General of South Africa was definitely a highlight in my career in government administration. I led a team of communication professionals, as well as translators and was responsible for the editing and publishing of all the government audit reports handled by the national office of the Auditor-General. I worked in this position during a critical transformational period and take pride in the fact that I facilitated the very first meeting between the then Auditor-General, Henry Kluever and his successor, Shauket Fakie, with the then President of South Africa, Mr Thabo Mbeki and his Cabinet at the Union Buildings. This meeting was instrumental in restoring relationships and understanding between the government executive and the Office of the Auditor-General, which had been very strained since the change in government in 1994. My tasks further included participating in meetings of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA) at the National Parliament in Cape Town and to handle all media relations relevant to the Auditor-General. I made a contribution to professionalising the publishing of the audit reports and assisted in relationship-building with international institutions relevant to the AG.
Head: Communication
Gauteng Provincial LegislatureHead: Communication
May. 1995 - Apr. 1997Johannesburg Area, South AfricaI had the privilege to serve as the very first Head: Communication at the newly established Gauteng Provincial Legislature during the exciting times of the change between the former Apartheid government and the new ANC government. In this role I had to set up the department of communication 'from scratch', establish a Public Information Centre; manage the Official Opening and Closing Events; manage the Launch Event of the Constitution of South Africa; handle media and public relations, as well as international parliamentary relations. I also wrote the very first 'People's Guide to the Legislature', as well as the first "Manual for Members of the Provincial Legislature'. Both publications became the 'benchmark' for similar publications published by other South African legislatures. I had the opportunity to build excellent relationships with various serving Members of the Provincial Legislature, many of whom have since moved into more senior political positions, including serving in the Presidency. I also had the chance to develop relationships with a variety of government officials at various levels and in various departments, gaining an excellent insight into the workings of the government administration, as well as legislative processes.
Managing Editor
BURDA SAManaging Editor
Aug. 1993 - Dec. 1994PretoriaIn December 1993 I launched a South African edition of the German fashion magazine, BURDA. I'm still proud that I pulled this off in a time when many of my peers were emigrating, owing to the concern of political instability. BURDA was very popular among women in South Africa, but sadly I did not see eye to eye with my financing partner, who had no understanding of the retail publication or fashion sectors and left the publication a year later.
