Self-employedMusic Composer
Feb. 1982 - Dec. 2020Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, BrazilIn 1988, after more than ten years of exhibiting worldwide as a photographic artist, Scott MacLeay left the visual arts to devote himself full-time to composing and recording music for contemporary dance, video art and for his pick-up group Private Circus. It is difficult to categorize the work of Private Circus. It was an eccentric hybrid of contemporary music, cabaret and alternative rock. Small Crowds was their first CD (1990) and was conceived as a series of intertwined nocturnal processions – a collection of night arias and assorted urban love songs set in a universe populated by an assortment of anonymous marginal personalities wandering aimlessly through the night, stopping from time to time to reflect on their respective destinies. A new compilation of music, The Other Side of the Story, composed for dances choreographed by Nadège MacLeay and performed by her company in Paris and other French regional capitals from 1990 to 1996 was released in March 2021. Celtic Days, Latin Nights, an album of unreleased demos of alternative country-rock songs originally recorded in the 90s, completes the trio of albums recorded by Private Circus in Paris. Core members Scott MacLeay and Christel Desjardin were joined by a diverse variety of musicians that changed depending on the needs of each project. Among these, Canadian guitarist Peter Rist and French soprano Sophie Boulin participated in Small Crowds, with Rist returning for Celtic Days, Latin Nights. The group disbanded in 1996, but MacLeay continued to produce work under the group's name. A fourth album, Locked Doors, Open Windows, containing material MacLeay composed in Paris and in Florianópolis, was released in June 2021.
