Department: Ministerio de Agricultura y Ganadería (MAG)
Reports to: Alexis Gamero, Immediate Supervisor
Job Purpose:
To lead and coordinate the development, implementation, and evaluation of national and regional strategies for agricultural trade. Ensure that policies and programs align with the goals of promoting sustainable agricultural development, fair trade practices, and improved market access for local producers. Represent the country in international and regional forums on agricultural trade and commerce.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Strategic Leadership:
• Design and implement trade policies that promote agricultural development and align with national economic goals.
• Lead and manage projects aimed at improving agricultural commerce, including initiatives like the Central de Abastos y Mayoreo (CDA).
2. Representation and Negotiation:
• Represent the country in international organizations such as the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the Central American Agricultural Council (CAC).
• Negotiate trade agreements and partnerships to enhance market access for local agricultural products.
3. Policy Development and Oversight:
• Develop and oversee policies to ensure fair trade practices and compliance with international standards.
• Coordinate with relevant ministries and stakeholders to integrate agricultural trade into national development strategies.
4. Stakeholder Engagement:
• Build and maintain relationships with local producers, exporters, and international trading partners.
• Collaborate with local governments, private sector representatives, and international organizations to promote agricultural trade opportunities.
5. Operational Management:
• Supervise the implementation of programs related to quality, safety, and competitiveness of agricultural products.
• Oversee the establishment and operation of initiatives like the CDA, including logistics, call center operations, and community outreach.
6. Monitoring and Reporting:
• Monitor trade trends, market dynamics, and compliance with international trade standards.
• Prepare detailed reports and updates on agricultural trade performance and initiatives for the MAG leadership.
Qualifications and Skills:
1. Education:
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Agricultural Economics, International Trade, Business Administration, or a related field.
2. Experience:
• Proven experience in agricultural trade, policy development, and project management.
• Regional and international representation in trade-related forums (e.g., WTO).
3. Skills:
• Strong negotiation, communication, and leadership skills.
• Expertise in market analysis, trade regulations, and export promotion.
• Ability to build strategic partnerships and foster collaboration across sectors.
Key Achievements:
• Successfully led the CDA pilot project, enhancing access to agricultural products for local communities.
• Represented the region at the WTO Committee on Agriculture, advocating for fair trade practices.
• Developed partnerships with international producers, improving market competitiveness.
