WriteWork.comCo-founder and Chief Technology Officer
Sep. 1997 - Jan. 2014Manchester - UK, Lyon - France, Brasilia - BrazilAs the CTO my roles were:
- Hiring and leading the development team
- Devops and linux system administration (RedHat Enterprise)
- Procurement and configuration of co-located servers at the Equinix data center in West Virginia.
- High availability configuration for MySQL and Apache servers
- PHP developper
- DNS configuration
- Coding scripts to migrate and convert databases
- XSLT coding
- Scrum Master I was responsible for all technical aspects of the digital library. With over 1 million monthly pageviews and over 350.000 users, I foresaw hosting and development operations, from sourcing our co-location providers to hiring the development team and supervising the SCRUM sprints as the SCRUM Master. In the early days of WriteWork, I was mainly concerted with Perl coding. When PHP and MySQL became available, I wrote code to convert a perl-based flat-file database into a MYSQL database, generating the database structure and normalization necessary as well as all SQL code that needed to be generated in order to implement the conversion. I also took care of separating the back-end code from the front-end code using XSLT. I conducted several migration initiatives, first from virtual hosting to co-located servers at the Equinix data-center in Virginia, and then migrating all services to the cloud at Amazon Web Services. My day to day included writing bash and PHP scripts, managing backups, managing high availability for MYSQL servers and optimizing the service together with our developpers in order to reduce page load times and server capacity. I was also involved in other side projects, such as structuring the customer support department, and helping with operations, hiring the development and techinical personnel, and finally, in 2014, together with my co-founder, in preparing the company to be sold, which we successfully did, selling to the largest global competitor in our industry at the time: StudyMode.com.
