Small Business Coach - Empower Broward
Aug. 2019 - May. 2020Fort Lauderdale, FL, United StatesThe Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance Foundation, with the support of SunTrust Bank, created a new program aimed at helping and empowering small businesses in Broward County’s most economically challenged zip codes, succeed with business services and resources.
As the Program Manager and Business Coach my role is to work with partner organizations to find businesses eager to grow, vet nominated companies who fit the program's criteria, interview the business owners and audit the company, identify immediate areas of improvement, provide business insights, industry specific best practices, and determine which services best help the business accomplish their goals to the next stage of success. I then refer the businesses to Alliance member volunteers who help them with specific needs in areas such as accounting, legal, and marketing services with a localized “Economic Gardening” approach.
Additionally in this role I have leveraged my own skills to provide the following hands on projects for our client companies:
Financial Modeling, Capitalization Planning, Product-Market Fit Analysis, Business Model Advising & Innovation, Software Development Resource Procurement, Strategic Branding Exercises, and Agency Vendor Procurement & Execution.

EDC acts as a entrepreneurial clearinghouse and assists newly emerging science and technology start-ups transition through the start-up and incubation phases.
As a Program Manager, I was responsible for marketing and business development for the organization, as well as performing client services for entrepreneurs who sought assistance from EDC. Marketing and branding efforts resulted in a 35% increase in sponsorships between 2007 - 2011.
My role as a Programs Manager and Entrepreneur in Residence consisted of:
- Assessing business plans and monitoring EDC Client companies; Identifying company needs and suggesting agile strategies and solutions.
- Representing EDC on panel discussions in South Florida regarding new venture creation in Science and Technology.
- Designing and executing direct marketing, web strategy, branding, logo design, and outreach tactics.
- Providing marketing and business planning support to EDC and client companies as needed; Managing print and online media campaigns.
- Coordinating GrowFL's Economic Gardening Program and Initiatives for the Southeast region of Florida.
- Supporting EDC's involvement with New World Angels and other capital formation activities.
- Supporting the production of annual EDC conferences, startup weekends, & other entrepreneurial programs.
- Identifying and developing relationships with potential corporate sponsors; Fund-raising for the organization.
- Building Industry/Academic partnerships between local universities and private industry.
- Strategic planning to create maximum visibility and impact, and execution of successful new programs.
- Developing and implementing a marketing plan for the newly formed Florida Institute for the Commercialization of Public research, which resulted in the achievement of several milestones and renewed state funding.
